Brothers of Holy Cross

Stained Glass - by Brother John Benesh, C.S.C., Lima, Peru - 10 April 2007

Celtic Cross

I designed the Celtic Cross for the door of a small chapel but the design was rejected. I made the cross anyway and it now hangs in the sacristy in the novitiate in Huaycan.

The first lamp stands in front of the novitiate chapel and almost all of the glass pieces were leftovers from the chapel window project. The second lamp sits in the rose garden near the library-classroom at the novitiate. The third lamp photo shows two of the four lamps that are located in the Garden of St. Joseph, alongside the chapel.

Mosaic - Joseph & JesusThe mosaic of St. Joseph and the Child Jesus is located in this same garden. Here again I used leftover glass, cutting it first in strips and then into little squares and rectangles. It measures 18 by 24 inches. The model for this mosaic was a 2 ½ by 4 inch holy card.

The other mosaic, the seal of the Congregation of Holy Cross is located in the entranceway of the Fe y Alegria Number 25 school, in Huascar, Canto Grande, outside of Lima. The diameter of this piece is about 4 and one-half feet. The tile is first class glazed tile that is manufactured in Lima. For six years I was the Principal of this school which has all the primary and secondary grades, special education and a vocational school. I didn’t have time for mosaics then; I did this seal in 2005.

The final two photos show a window in the new Polyclinico Hermano Andres located in the Parish Center in Huascar, Canto Grande. One photo is an inside view on the day of the dedication of the clinic and the other is an outside view.
