Leonardo (Alex) was born in Erie, PA and attended elementary and high school
there. After graduating from Cathedral Prep High School, he felt called to Holy Cross and
entered Sacred Heart Juniorate in Watertown, WI, in 1940. After the novitiate he studied at
Notre Dame, IN, earning his A.B. degree magna cum laude.
His first assignment was with the faculty at Reitz Memorial high School in Evansville, IN, for 10
years and then he joined the faculty of St. Joseph High School, South Bend, IN for 4 years. In
1958. He was appointed principal and superior of Reitz Memorial in Evansville. In 1961,
Leonardo was transferred to Archbishop Hoban High School in Akron, OH, where he served for
27 years, teaching English and directing many drama and stage productions over the
years.
He was a consummate professional with an engaging and commanding voice. He was a
disciplined and organized teacher who passed along those qualities to his students that
went far beyond the classroom. His cheerfulness with the faculty and staff, amiable
companionship and great love of the arts were qualities that were missed when he retired
to Notre Dame. Literally thousands of students benefitted from his remarkable patience and
generosity.
