Brother Bernard (Frederick) Mosier, C.S.C.

Bernard was born in Kersey, PA and attended elementary school there. After the 8th grade he entered the aspirancy program of the Holy Cross Brothers at Sacred Heart College in Watertown, WI. After his profession, he taught for 3 years at Cathedral High School in Indianapolis, IN. He taught for a year at Notre Dame and returned to teach at Indianapolis and then to Sacred Heart College at Watertown. In 1935 he was assigned to the missions in East Bengal (Bangladesh) and taught in high schools in Bandura and Dacca for 10 years. After World War II, he returned to Notre Dame and prefected a dorm and earned his master's degree in education. In 1945 he was assigned to teach at Reitz Memorial High School in Evansville, IN, for 3 years then to Holy Trinity High School in Chicago, IL, St. Joseph Juniorate in Valatie, NY and Notre Dame High School in West Haven, CT. In 1953, Bernard began a long and influential tenure (27 years) of teaching and prefecting at Gibault School for Boys in Terre Haute, IN. He retired to the Brothers Center at Notre Dame for 3 years, then in 1983 was called to assist in the recovery mission of St. Joseph's House in Spartansburg, PA, serving as a spiritual guide and counselor. Bernard was a rugged athlete and outdoors man and was renowned for his linguistic skills in Bengali. He was long remembered by scholars there for his unusual mastery of the language. His influence on boys he taught and counseled was well known by many in Holy Cross and among the lay people he served.
