Brother Augustus (Bernard) Patin, C.S.C.

born: August 6, 1915

died: December 26, 2000

Brother Augustus (Bernard) Patin, C.S.C.

Augustus (Gus) was born in Milwaukee, WI, and attended elementary school there. He graduated from Boys Technical School and spent 7 years working as an inspector and salesman of electronic controls. He joined the Brothers in 1941 and after the novitiate, studied at Notre Dame to earn his A.B. degree in 1945. Gus was an adept teacher of mathematics. His first teaching assignment was at Notre Dame High School in Biloxi, MS, for 2 years. He then taught for 3 years at Catholic Central High School in Monroe, MI, and 4 years on the staff at St. Charles Boys Home in Milwaukee, WI , before teaching for 6 years at Cathedral High School in Indianapolis, IN. In 1960 he was on the faculty at St. Joseph high in South Bend, IN, for 2 years and then taught at Holy Cross High School in River Grove, IL, for 12 years. Beginning in 1974, he spent 22 years as a staff member at the Brothers Center at Notre Dame. During that time he tutored students at St. Joseph High School for 4 years and was on the faculty of Holy Cross College for 2 years. He was a multi-skilled and talented person and an effective teacher. His strict principles in the classroom were prevalent, but his students owed much to his persistent and encouraging manner. He was generous with his time in assisting them beyond the classroom. Though he was perceived by some to have a brusque exterior, he earned the trust of children and his heart often went out to help and counsel them.
