Brother Jerome Andrew Quella, C.S.C.

Jerome was born in Appleton, WI where he attended St. Joseph Elementary School. In 1947 he entered Sacred Heart Juniorate at Watertown, WI, and completed his high school there in 1951. After his novitiate year, his first assignment was on the staff of Columba Hall, Notre Dame. Jerome spent his entire religious life on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. In 1953 he was assigned to the press room of the Ave Maria Press where he worked for 2 years. He moved to the Notre Dame Post Office to work as a postal clerk for 5 years. He served as a canvasser for the Ave Maria Press for a year and then in 1962 returned to the Post Office where he worked for 23 more years. Health problems prompted him to retire to Columba hall in 1985. During all those years, Jerome and Brother Andrew Sukenik spent many months preparing the land adjacent to Holy Cross Village, Notre Dame, IN, and they beautified the area with the numerous fir and blue spruce trees. All of the trees were dug up as saplings in Techny, IL, transported and planted by these two brothers. Jerome was a physically fit person before it became popular. He loved nature hikes and enjoyed fishing. Customers and employees at the Post Office remembered the cheerful and enjoyable conversations they had with him. With his deteriorating health, Jerome transferred to Dujarie House, Holy Cross Village in 1990. There he could still enjoy the beauty of nature seen in the grounds and woods around the building.
