Brother Thomas James Balthazor, C.S.C.

Robert was born in Owensboro, KY and attended elementary and secondary schools there. He began his college studies in 1947 at Brescia College in Owensboro and entered Holy Cross in 1951. After his novitiate year he completed his studies graduating magna cum laude from St. Edward's University in Austin, TX in 1954. Robert was by profession an accountant, a skill he brought to both the classroom and office in all his assignments. His deliberate precision was symbolic of his gentle, patient and good-natured temperament.

He began his ministry in 1955 with the staff at St. Edward High School in Lakewood, OH, for 4 years. He then served for 4 years at Hoban High School in Akron, OH, then at Holy Cross High School in River Grove, IL for 6 years. In 1969 he returned to Hoban High School to be of service for 10 more years. In 1979 he worked for 14 years with other brothers in the offices of the Senior Friendship Centers in south Florida, first in Fort Meyers, then in Sarasota, and finally in Venice. In 1993 he retired with the Holy Cross community at Casa Santa Cruz in Phoenix, AZ assisting there until ill health necessitated coming to Dujarie House in 2001.
