As you take a careful look at being a Holy Cross Brother, ask yourself the questions below through prayer and individual reflection. Be sure to discuss your answers with others, such as your spiritual director, and close ones. Keep in mind that the decision to become a Holy Cross Brother is a process which demands time, prayer, faith and trust.
- What gifts do I have to offer?
- What are my strengths?
- What are my weaknesses?
- How do I relate to authority?
- How do I relate with my natural family?
- How do I relate with persons of the opposite sex?
- How do I relate with persons of my same sex?
- Am I being realistic in my self-assessment?
- Are my gifts compatible with the Holy Cross mission?
- How might becoming a Holy Cross Brother influence my relationship with the Lord?
- How might it influence my relationship with the Catholic Church?
- Why am I considering this decision?
- What is it about the Holy Cross Brotherhood that most interests or motivates me?
- Are there other lifestyles that interest me? If so, what are they?
- What do I find attractive about each of these other lifestyles?
- Can I see myself in these other lifestyles?
- To which of the above lifestyle options do I feel most led by God?
- Is the option I feel most led to the same one my feelings tell me is best for me?
- Do the people I am closest to agree with my answers to these questions?
- If not, can they suggest changes I should make in my attitude?
- Am I comfortable with what will be required of me by the brotherhood, most notably vows of chastity, poverty and obedience?
- Can I clearly state the reasons for my decision?
- Do I need help from others to make my decision official? If yes, who?
- Do I have a good feeling about my decision?
- Do I feel inner peace about my decision?
When you have made your decision, live with it for a while. Pray about it. Discuss it with your spiritual advisor. Then decide if:
- You still feel comfortable about your decision.
- You are still at peace with your decision.
